UFC FIGHT NIGHT 59 BOSTON – MY WINNERS

UFC Fight Night 59, Boston lived up to the hype from the very first fight on FIGHT PASS, for me though the pure transitions, fluidity and skill shown of his Jiu-Jitsu in the aired Prelim fights on Fox Sports 1 was Charles Rosa, to me it was so awesome to watch. With an array of submission attempts and one step ahead I felt, it was beautiful, with a tight D’arce choke sunk in the third round.

Another Prelim fight for which I personally enjoyed every single minute was Johnny Case, another example of beautiful short elbows (yes I love using my elbows too), amongst a great winning fight.

Patrick Holohan is always impressive, especially with his ground game, he came out fast, with intent on finishing Shane Howell within the first round. He almost succeeded several times with a rear naked choke, but credit where credit due, Shane Howell is tough, durable and managed to escape Paddy’s rear naked choke in the last ten seconds of the first round to end up on top. Although it was a one sided ‘beating’ for Shane, his skills on the ground amazed alot of people to escape several of Paddy’s Chokes.

Wow is all I can say at the beginning of Cathal Pendred’s fight! Who else saw Sean Spencer knee (accidently) Cathal when he was on the ground at 2 mins 32 seconds of the first round? Cathal clearly stated ‘woah, hang on’ but even the commentators by passed the incident and carried on commentating about the ‘over hand right punches’ that were then connecting with Cathal after that incident by Sean Spencer!

On the flipside of this, I feel Sean Spencer did a great job of working his boxing skills, Octagon control, damage and therefore I did not see what the judges saw (good job I am not a judge), then again I do not think I am alone in saying this!

I have to mention Ron Stallings for taking this fight against Uriah Hall on five days notice, not many athlete’s go ahead once it is fight week when it comes to Uriah Hall so full props to Ron. Uriah Hall is a beast on his feet and has a very nasty ground and pound game for which we saw again Sunday.

Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone and Benson Henderson Face Off — Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and Benson Henderson

The Co-Main event Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone vs Benson Henderson. What can one say. Cerrone is definitely in his prime and Henderson has been on the end of some shocking decisions as of late, but he will be back to winning ways I feel very soon. Again I did not see what the judges saw in this fight and I am sure I am not the only one!

Conor McGregor lived up to every bit of the hype, starting off with ‘flipping the bird’ at Dennis Siver as he did not touch gloves. Siver managed to keep his composure all week and not let McGregor get into his head one bit (unlike most of McGregor’s previous opponents).

McGregor did not dispose of Siver within the two minutes as he previously predicted, but he did dispose of him in the second round, convincingly. Next for McGregor is the featherweight champion Jose Aldo either in Las Vegas or Croke Park in Dublin.

BOXING SUPERSTAR MANNY PACQUIAO BECOMES A SHAREHOLDER IN MMA PROMOTION ONEFC

Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao has become a shareholder in Asian-based Mixed Martial Art Company One Fighting Championship, [OneFC], it has been reported earlier today.

The eight division world champion boxer, [in which he has ten world titles] already owns several gyms in Asia all equipped to offer MMA classes and training areas, so the next step for the ‘newbie’ in the sport was to become a shareholder.

‘SMOOTH’ BENSON HENDERSON HITS THE NAIL ON THE HEAD!

As of late, Twitter has become increasingly popular within athletes of the MMA community, well not just the MMA community, as this is the field I am interested in, I guess this is just what I notice!

When, Gilbert Melendez sent out the following tweet, which opens up into his Instagram account with a picture of the UFC Belt, Anthony Pettis sent his reply [which is when it turns interesting]. Benson Henderson then sent his reply, which is the whole reason this article was wrote!

‘HELLRAISER’ HELEN HARPER SET TO FACE SIMONA SOUKUPOVA ON SEPT 6TH

Helen ‘Hellraiser’ Harper announced earlier today on September 6th at Liquid Nightclub in Windsor [UK], she will be facing Simona Soukupova for a strawweight contest, on the MMA Showdown 3 card.

Soukupova [4-3-1], is a very experienced athlete who has competed against the likes of Felice Herrig [currently in the TUF house] on there XFC19 card back in August 2012 where she lost to a decision and then Katja Kankaanpaa [fighting for the 115lb Invicta title also on September 6th, which you can watch on UFCFightpass for the first time] in which their bout ended in a Draw in Septemeber 2012; If you’re looking for a more recent win from Soukupova then you can now watch her win over Cassie Rodish from Invicta 5 [April 2013] on the UFCFightpass platform, which is available to watch now.

Harper, who recently went over to Las Vegas to try out for ‘TUF20’ herself, [although not making it through to the final 16], out of the 36 females who did go out there to compete, Harper did make it through to the final 20 which is a great achievement for someone who has only been training just under 3 years.

Harper [2-0], trained out Thailands Phuket Top Team before moving to Andy Roberts BJJ over here in the UK just recently. Having had the pleasure of witnessing Harper compete live and cageside in her debut amateur K1 contest for Ultimate Impact 11 back in February this year, winning via Split Decision, Harper is no easy’fight’ for Soukupova and whatever the outcome rest assured you will know both females will have left everthing in the Octagon come September 6th.

HOLLY HOLM SIGNS WITH THE UFC [FINALLY]

Holly Holm has now officially signed with the UFC. After months of speculation, Holm has put pen to paper and signed an official contract.

President, Dana White, announced via Twitter by tweeting out the following:

Welcome to the UFC Holy Holm whilst holding up the picture below:

Holm [7-0] has a considerable amount of experience as an ex-champion boxer. She trains out of the famed Jackson’s MMA Gym and has been seen trading punches and kicks with UFC Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones.

Holm is currently recouping from a broken arm, sustained from her last bout against Juliana Werner at Legacy FC 30, on April 4th but looks to be fighting fit around October/November time.

For now, we can all let the rumours carry on as to whom we think, Holm’s first opponent will be? For me personally it makes sense for Jessica Eye but that is just my opinion!

The Women’s Bantamweight Division is now getting more interesting with the latest two additions:

Lauren Murphy and Holy Holm.

‘CHOPPER’ CHI LEWIS-PARRY TALKS ALAIN NGALANI [PART 1]

On July 11th we got to see Chi Lewis-Parry makes his second apperance for promotion ONEFC. He was tasked with his original opponent ‘Alain Ngalani‘ in a Re-Match after his first bout for the promotion on May 30th ended in a No Contest, after an accidental Low Blow.

I managed to get some time with Chi before this bout, where we discussed many things, one being, The Re-Match.

On July 11^th we get to see the re-match of Chi and Alain Ngalani in Taipe, Taiwan.

How are you feeling knowing you have the re-match with Ngalani

‘I wasn’t sure I was going to get the re-match straight away. I thought I might have had to fight someone else before him, but I’m glad I’ve got it, it’s happening, it is still fresh. He is still in there in the air I breathe and I still haven’t got that monkey off my back so to speak. I need to put this one to bed so I can move on’.

And obviously only sharing the octagon for only 40 seconds with Ngalani in his first meeting. I asked what if anything did he learn about Ngalani

‘I noticed he was very strong, has a very orthodox clinch move’

And will he change any of his game plan going into this re-match at all

‘make sure my knee hits above the belt! He doesn’t know what I’m coming with, I’m still an unknown entity’.

How do you go about preparing for an athlete of Ngalani’s calibre

‘you cannot find people like him every single day, he is unique, you can’t find people built like him or move like him, he’s a unique human being, that’s if you can call him human. He looks fantastic, he’s supple, he kicks hard. He is 39. He’s peaking as he gets older, you can’t really emulate him, you can drill something a 1000 times, but when you get to fight, it doesn’t happen. I know what he likes to throw, I know it’s about reading him, I know when he likes to throw it , it is about reading him before he likes to throw it, I picked it up from Alistair, I’m sure Ngalani does not hit as hard as Alistair, I take comfort in knowing I can take a kicking from Alistair’.

Both of you have not gone past the first round in any of your fights [bar your debut MMA fight with Ollie Beard], we were expecting fireworks the first time and got to example a tiny fraction of that, what ‘explosions’ are we going to see this time round

‘I’m not a jump from the gate and start sprinting guy, I’m more composed. I don’t really have a formula but quouting conor mcgregor “it’s a fight what happens happens” it’s a sport, I can work mount escapes for six months and get into the fight and get nothing, work everything, play towards making his strengths his weakness and see how it goes’.

‘You don’t get to predict how the wave is going how to crash when you’re riding it, you just have to ride it and see how it happens’

Being the humble athlete Chi is he does not make predications but he did leave me with this:

‘I will guarantee a tremendous performance from both of us, one warrior will win, one warrior will lose, both of us will leave as friends’.

Thursday July 10th

Chi weighed in at 243 lbs and Alain Ngalani weighing-in at 231 lbs, everything was now set for Friday’s Main Card action.

Friday July 11th

As the actual event started, Lewis-Parry was getting the better of Ngalani in the stand up and striking. Ngalani went for the takedown by way of a Judo trip,then gained full mount against the side of the cage. From top position, Ngalani hit Lewis-Parry with a series of elbows but that did not seem to faze Lewis-Parry, he returned his own shots, this time, three thunderous bodyshots to Ngalani. With a little bit of a ‘stale mate’ Lewis-Parry then quickly sweeps in an reversal. In side control, Parry struck Ngalani with vicious elbows to the head and followed that up with a couple more, knocking out Ngalani at the 4 minute 11 second mark of the first round.

TUF 20 CAST NAMED

The cast for this season’s ‘The Ultimate Fighter 20’ has been revealed, and eight new names were revealed.

The eight new additions to the cast include Heather Jo Clark (6-4), Aisling Daly (14-5), Lisa Ellis (15-8), Angela Hill (1-0), Justine Kish (4-0), Angela Magana (11-6), Randa Markos (4-1) and Jessica Penne (11-2 MMA).

They will join the eight fighters previously announced Joanne Calderwood (8-0), Alex Chambers (4-1), Carla Esparza (9-2), Felice Herrig (9-5), Bec Rawlings (5-3), Emily Peters Kagan (3-1), Rose Namajunas (2-1) and Tecia Torres (4-0).

UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and top contender Gilbert Melendez will be coaches. Filming for this season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter 20’ has just started and will air in Setember on TV.

LAUREN MURPHY SIGNED TO UFC; WILL FACE SARA MCMANN AUGUST 16TH

The UFC has signed unbeaten Invicta FC Bantamweight Champion Lauren Murphy to a UFC contract, not only that Murphy will not have to wait long for her UFC debut as she will be facing former UFC title contender Sara McMann on August 16th for UFC Fight Night in Bangor, Maine.

Sara is the number 7 ranked Bantamweight in the world, with her only loss coming from current UFC champion Ronda Rousey. Lauren Murphy is ranked number 8 and is 8-0 in her MMA career so far. Lauren has not fought since December of 2013, after winning the Invicta FC Bantamweight title by defeating Miriam Nakamoto in the fourth round via TKO (Nakamoto was unable to continue due to a knee injury sustained in the third round, but did come out for the fourth round before her knee giving out completely).

There will undoubtabley be questions as to where this leaves Invicta FC with another one of their athletes leaving the promotion and who now will get the chance to compete for the now vacant Bantamweight Title.

Tickets for UFC Fight Night, which is headlined by the light heavyweight bout between Ryan Bader and Ovince Saint Preux, and which also features Tim Boetsch vs. Brad Tavares, are on sale now.

UIC 12 takes place this weekend with a bumper line up of fights, live from the G1 leisure centre in Gloucester. Competing on the card is Aaron Khalid who looks to showcase his ever developing skill set and ahead of his match up, I caught up with him to get his thoughts on his fight …

Jack Price: “I will be looking to control the fight”

Jack Price is no stranger to the Ultimate Impact show, after competing on the promotion in the past, and this weekend he returns to the show fight in a K1 bout.

Terry Doyle: “I’ve trained my ass off for this fight and I’m coming to win”

This coming weekend see’s Ultimate Impact host their 12th show, with a packed line up of fights, and one of the championship fights on the evening features Terry Doyle as he aims to take home the lightweight championship.

Here is a breakdown of the fightcard for tonights event:

Current UIC welterweight champion Phil Wells fighting out of Swindon Vale Tudo will make his first defence after an impressive and dominate performance at UIC10 when he beat Rob Leybourne with an impressive TKO finish. Looking to take the belt from Phil is highly touted Adam Bousiff fighting out of Force MMA under veteran head coach Daz Jones. Adam scored one of the quickest finishes in Ultimate Impact history when he TKO’d Chris Astley following a pin point accurate hook and followed up with some heavy hammer fists before Leon Roberts stepped in!

In our first female championship fight, Laura Handy and Cheryl Fylnn will take to the cage to become the first ever UIC K1 champion! Laura has been on a tear recently winning her last 3 fights, all of which have been at Ultimate Impact Events and she has shown a determination that is rarely seen. Her style means that she never takes a backward step and just keeps coming round after round until her hand is raised at the end. However she will be taking on Cheryl Flynn who arguably has more technical striking and also keeps coming forward. Cheryl is known for her agressiveness and high volume style so this match up is set for fireworks, which ever lady takes it will have certainly earnt it.

Veteran UIC lightweight champion Wayne Drake seems to improve each and every time he steps inside the Ultimate Impact cage and is the perfect example of someone who does his talk inside the cage. Always very well prepared Wayne will most certainly have the grappling advantage over the heavy hitting challenger Terry Doyle. Terry has knockout power in both hands and Ultimate Impact fans will know all about it! This is a true grappler vs striker match and I personally can not wait to see who comes out the champion.
