BAMMA FIGHT NIGHT 1 EVENT REVIEW

Saturday 7^th June saw Bamma hold their first ‘Fight Night 1’ Askham vs Nunes for the Bamma World Middleweight Title at the 02 Guildhall in Southampton to a packed out crowd.

The atmosphere at the 02 Guildhall was friendly, welcoming and very electric. Being at a smaller venue than their usual arena tours, you really got a sense of no matter where you were seated you were part of the action and boy was there was a lot of action.

BAMMA MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD TITLE FIGHT

MAX NUNES 12-2 SCOTT ASKHAM 12-0

Round one opens up and it’s Nunes who is in first with his punches, he then slips and Askham is in Nunes guard, Nunes is attempting to set up a Triangle but to no avail. Askham postures up and starts to land some meaningful punches to Nunes but he is staying active and busy, Askham delivers more punches to Nunes but he manages to get back to his feet. Askham has Nunes against the cage landing punches whilst Nunes is trying to gain wrist control and lands some knees to Askham, which Askham also returned himself. The canvas appears to be slippy as Nunes is now using more of his striking ability and again nearly slipped. Askham manages to get Nunes back against the cage to try to control Nunes just as the bell goes for the end of round one.

Round two opens up with Nunes coming out with leg strikes and has Askham up against the cage. Nunes throws an awesome knee but Askham turns it around where both guys are trying to fight for underhooks and a better position but the referee steps in and splits them up – back to the centre of the cage and Nunes is trying to keep it long but gets caught by Askham who takes him down. Askham has Nunes against the cage and drops him albeit briefly as Nunes pops right back up, at this point Askham tries to take Nunes down again but Nunes takedown defence was too much for Askham this time as he himself dropped to his knees, the referee once again splits them up. Back to the centre again with some striking action from both fighters whom both clearly are looking tired coming towards the final seconds of this second round, Askham attempts a spinning elbow which misses, then the bell goes for end of round two.

Round three, both fighters raise their hand and touch gloves for a sign of respect in this third and final round. They both come out landing kick for kick, and then punch for punch. Askham looks to clinch and hold Nunes for which he succeeds and again forces Nunes against the cage where he starts to unleash his fists of fury on Nunes which then sees him slumped to the canvas and Askham carries on until the referee steps in.

ALEXEI ROBERTS 10-6 ARTEM KOTOV 3-2

Roberts comes out with few left jabs then Kotov comes in to go for a single leg takedown but it ends up being a full on single leg with a suplex followed by some GnP. Roberts get back to his feet but Kotov still has his back then Kotov lifts up Roberts and then full on body slams him. The crowd are going wild shouting ‘Artem’ ‘Artem’ ‘Artem’. Roberts is back up to his knees and Kotov continued to unleash Gnp on Roberts until the referee called a stop to the fight.

DRAGAN PESIC 3-2 ASHLEIGH GRIMSHAW 16-8-1-1

Pesic comes out and lands a straight punch, Grimshaw pushes Pesic against the cage, Pesic landing some knees, Grimshaw takes Pesic down and Pesic in full guard there is not much going on so the referee stands them both up. Pesic lands a solid punch and kick to Grimshaw. Pesic tried to jump and pull guard but it was Grimshaw who got the better of this and took Pesic down by slamming Pesic to the canvas where Grimshaw got Pesic in an Arm-Triangle Choke and he was forced to tap.

WINNER ASHLEIGH GRIMSHAW 3MINS 35 SECS Rnd 1 VIA ARM TRIANGLE CHOKE

TIM MENZIES 2-1 ALEX MONTAGNANI 7-1-1

Both guys come out punching, Montagnani gets Menzies against the cage trying to fight for a position then all of a sudden Montagnani knees Menzies followed by a flying knee and it’s all over for Menzies.

MICHAEL CUTTING 5-2 ED ARTHUR 4-0

First of all there was a lot of build-up and ‘hype’ to this fight. Mike Cutting entered the cage first to a very vocal crowd of Cutting fans, next was the turn of Ed Arthur who let’s just say his fans were more vocal and were ‘raising the roof’ of the 02 Guildhall. Once both fighters were in the cage, neither fighter took their eyes of one another, Cutting in his usual crouched down position and Arthur pacing back and forth and the crowds are chanting ‘Eddie’ Eddie’ Eddie’ from the stalls.

As round one gets under way it was Cutting who got the initial takedown. Cutting gets a warning for striking Arthur with accidental knee whilst Arthur’s hand is placed on the canvas, Referee speaks to Cutting and Arthur the fight is resumed. Cutting is working well of his back trying to set up a sub but to no avail all the while Arthur is landing ferocious punches to Cuttings face for which the crowd are going wild and chanting ‘Eddie’ Eddie’ Eddie’. Both guys scramble with Arthur in side control raining shots, Cutting turns it around and ends up in Arthur’s guard who locks up a triangle attempt on Cutting for the remainder of round for which Cutting just rides out.

As soon as we start round two Arthur comes out with his hard punches backing Cutting against the cage adding in some knees also. Cutting attempts a seated guillotine which Arthur defends as there is a scramble, Cutting is on his knees, Arthur scoops round to Cuttings back to secure a RNC.

AMATEUR FIGHTS

NICK JONES 2-1 MARCUS MITCHELL 1-0

Both came out exchanging strikes, Jones took Mitchell down, both guys scrambled which resulted in Mitchell in full and Jones on top position, Mitchell shrimped backwards managing to get back to his feet where both guys started punching, Jones went down, Mitchell capitalized on this and continued to GnP until the referee stopped the fight.

WINNER MARCUS MITCHELL 1 MIN 19 49 SECS Rnd 1 VIA TKO (PUNCHES)

ANDY HANNON 0-1 JOSH ROE 1-0

The opening round sees Roe push Hannon against the cage and takes him down, Hannon straight away is working on an armbar against the cage fence, Roe is trying to adjust the position by using his knees to deter him but Hannon is still holding on trying to gain that armbar even shifting his position slightly.

Round two and Hannon is straight out striking with his kicks but its Roe who drops Hannon with a brutal kick, but in return fires back with a up kick. It is back to standing and Hannon lands a few low kicks whilst Roe returns with punches. Roe is winning the striking department and seems Hannon wants no part of it until he catches Roe with a lovely right cross. Great striking round.

Round three and Hannon lands an accidental low blow to Roe, Roe recovers and were back to a standing war. Hannon is landing more of his punches to Roe’s face and goes in for a takedown but is defended well; there is a scramble both guys give it their all as Hannon is looking for the sub as the fight ends with Roe in top position.

WINNER JOSH ROE VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION 29-28, 29-28, 30-27

DAMIEN KORYGA RICKY MITCHELL

Round one and its Mitchell straight in with a 1,2 combination then takes Koryga down he attempts a guillotine to no avail, Koryga fights back and attempts to get Mitchell in a guillotine himself but to no avail. Koryga slams Mitchell and is working hard on the ground. They manage to get back to their feet briefly but its clear Koryga is getting the better of Mitchell in this opening round.

Round two and its Koryga straight out and gets Mitchell down, Mitchell get backs to his feet and Koryga forces him against the cage fence, Koryga is landing some knees then manages to lock in a standing guillotine.

ULTIMATE IMPACT FIGHT NIGHT 2 EVENT REVIEW #UIFN2

Gloucester, Saturday, April 26^th and Ultimate Impact were holding ULTIMATE IMPACT FIGHT NIGHT 2 at Liquid Nightclub. A card full of eleven fights consisting of six amateur MMA, three k1 and two Pro MMA fights, with a packed club, full of buzzing atmosphere it was time to get the event underway.

MC Darren Rees was holding down the centre of the cage, whilst the third men in the cage for all of the action tonight were Ron ’Bomber’ Frith on duty for the MMA action and David Willmot for the K1 action.

In the words of Darren Rees……”It’s time for War” as the first fight of the night is announced.

UNIFIED AMATEUR 3X3 MINS

BRAD WELLAWAY MAD DOGS 2-2 JACK BRYANT TROJAN 1-0

Rnd 1 Jack Bryant is straight out and in for the TD, Wellaway gets an attempt at a guillotine and Bryant is trying to fight to get himself out for which he succeeds, he then procedes to lands headshots on Wellaway, all the while Wellway is looking for a sub but to no avail. Bryant on top maintaining control, adding in some GnP but Wellaway is working well of his back and looking to set up an armbar in the dying few seconds of this opening round only to run out of time.

Rnd 2 Jack Bryant straight out and in with jabs, then shoots in and gets TD, Wellway manages to roll out of position and gain top mount briefly only for Bryant to be back on top and in control, being very dominant on top using short sharp shots.

Rnd 3 Jack Bryant shoots straight in leaving his neck exposed for which Wellaway sees and attempts a guillotine but to no avail. Bryant is landing shots on Wellaway and both young guys are giving it their all, Wellaway attempts to go for an armbar near to the close of the round for Bryant to get out of. This had been one awesome opening fight from two seventeen year old lads who futures are very bright. WINNER JACK BRYANT VIA UD 29-28

LEWIS CLAPHAM M.M.A.A 3-0 MATT FIGLAK TROJAN 3-0-1

Rnd 1 Matt Figlak comes out and a gets TD, Clapham has wrist control and Figlak is struggling to break free, he does so then proceeds to dominate in top position although not a lot of movement or action in this opening round.

Rnd 2 Matt Figlak is straight out with a one, two then takes Clapham down, Clapham gets back to his feet although not for long as Figlak is back in top position landing body shots when he can, Clapham holding down Figlak trying to gain control.

Rnd 3 Matt Figlak straight in and Clapham clinches up with both guys trying for a TD, after a brief struggle it was Figlak who got the TD in the end landing in side control. Clapham is working hard up against the cage, even nearly having an armbar, but using his toes in the cage as leverage referee Ron Frith warns Clapham and with a slight tap on his arm to get his toes out of the cage, he loses the armbar, Figlak capalizes on this raining down blows but Clapham weathers the storm only for Figlak to see an opportunity and grab Claphams back to sink in a RNC.

K1 3X2 MINS

BEN HARRIS W.A.K.T. 2-1 CJ ABDULAFUR GLOUCESTER MARTIAL ARTS TEAM XTREME DEBUT

Rnd 1 Both guys are straight out but it’s CJ who is landing first, in what appears to be an all-out war from both guys. CJ drops Harris who gets a standing count from referee David Willmot, Harris comes back with full intent along with a very game CJ in this full on opening round.

Rnd 2 Ben Harris opens up with kicks and moves nicely onto knees as CJ comes in with punches, it appears that Harris is getting the better of CJ in the opening part of this second round, pinning CJ against the cage. CJ moves away off the cage and goes down (appears to be from back pain), referee David Willmot checks CJ is okay, the fight carries on, Harris is straight in with a full on jab catching CJ clean in the face just before the end of the round.

During the end of the second round it was clear CJ was in pain from the earlier back injury, therefore he could not continue into the third round.

WILL STEPHENSON TROJAN WORCESTER 0-1 ADAM GREENE TOJAN FREE FIGHTERS 1-0

RND 1 Adam Greene comes out first landing punches and tags Stephenson who goes down, Greene capitalizes on this and has Stephenson up against the cage and goes for his neck in attempting to gain a submission but to no avail. Stephenson gets back to his feet briefly as Greene lifts Stephenson with a big slam TD, Greene landing big shots on Stephenson as he looks up to the ref, Greene still working hard on Stephenson even taking his back in the final 15 seconds of the round, but a gallant Stephenson hangs on in there to see the round out.

Round 2 Adam Greene is straight out with a one, two combination and gains Stephenson’s back, taking him down, continuing on his back raining down blows. Stephenson reverses the situation after weathering the storm, in gaining Greene’s back and sinking in a tight RNC.

WINNER 2MIN 04 SEC RND 2 VIA RNC WILL STEPHENSON

TALASI MAY MAD DOGS COMBAT 4-0 JOHNNY BRYANT TROJAN FREE FIGHTERS DEBUT

Round 1 Johnny Bryant Comes out and gets the TD, both guys are grappling for top control for which Bryant gets in the end, in doing so May has left his neck exposed, Bryant see’s this and attempts an guillotine for which May escapes, Bryant grabs May’s arm whilst seeking to escape the prior guillotine attempt and attempts an armbar for which May answers back in raining down blows and grabs Bryant’s back, Bryant transitions out and gets mount briefly only for May to gain top position in this awesome display of grappling from both guys in the opening round.

Round 2 Talasi May is out gains mount, Bryant is trying to buck off May as he is landing punches, all the while gaining himself back to his own corner from his opponents corner to hear instructions from his own corner. Bryant slowly gets back to his feet but all the while under pressure from May in this second round. (Bryant managed to get from one side of the cage to the other with May in full mount raining blows so he could get instructions from his own corner – a well-educated, cage aware young man).

Round 3 Both guys are out and straight up against the cage, fighting for dominance, Bryant gets a TD and lands in top position, both guys are working hard in this final round but its Bryant that is the more dominant one being in top position and controlling May. It goes to the judges for a decision.

K1 3X2 MINS

JAMES HALL SILVERBACK MMA DEBUT MATT KAUFMAN TROJAN WORCESTER 2-1

Round 1 James Hall Is landing the cleaner of the kicks and appears to do more damage. Attempting an occasional spinning move but it is clearly not working. Kaufman in with teeps trying to keep Hall at distance but Hall is persistence and keeping the pressure on Kaufman.

Round 2 Matt Kaufman comes out fired up straight away in the opening of this round, Hall still putting on pressure and doing the ‘odd’ spinning movement which does not result into anything. Kaufman now finding his range and rhythm, getting his movement going a lot more in the last thirty seconds, using the clinch several times.

Round 3 Hall Putting on the pressure as soon as this final round is under way, unloading shots, referee David Willmot steps in and gives Kaufman an eight count then waves the fight off as Kaufman was in no position to continue.

MARTY WOLF ELITE TRAINING CENTRE 1-2-1 MICHAEL FIGLAK TROJAN FREE FIGHTERS 4-0

Round 1 Marty Wolf is straight in first and both guys are battling it out for dominance, Wolf using knees and drops Figlak slightly as the action goes to the ground. Wolf attempts for a triangle, which looks pretty tights from where I am sitting but Figlak weathers the storm and holds out until the end of the round.

Round 2 Michael Figlak comes out of this opening second round with a lot more fire, Figlak gets a TD landing in top position, Wolf trying to work a submission of his back, both guys keeping it busy throughout the second round but its Figlak in the more dominant position.

Round 3 Both guys keeping it standing for the first thirty seconds of this final round, Figlak shoots in for the TD and gets it, Wolf attempts another triangle and throwing in odd punches to try to soften up Figlak but to no avail. It goes to the judges for a decision.

AHREN FOSTER COMBAT ATHLETICS 0-1 CARL SWABY TROJAN FREE FIGHTERS 1-0

Round 1 Carl Swaby straight in from the off is all over Foster. Swaby catches Foster coming forward with what looks like a throw but one thing is clear Foster goes down and does not get back up, it’s all over.

THEO ARTHUR SILVERBACK MMA DEBUT STEVE SMITH GLOUCESTER MARTIAL ARTS TEAM XTREME 3-0

Round 1 Theo Arthur using his kicks to start then pressuring with punches, Smith is pushing forward, pressuring Arthur with his own punches, finding his range and rhythm towards the end of the round with his own kicks.

Round 2 Steve Smith opens the round coming in with teeps then punches, Arthur giving back the same. Smith starts working in the clinch, Arthur catches Smith with a nice right hook, which does not faze him and Smith is setting up his teeps followed up by punches straight afterwards. Arthur is coming in with jumping push kicks, which he is telegraphing and rushing in as doing so, but as a debut fighter, he is holding his own.

Round 3 Steve Smith straight in opening up with kicks, Arthur in with his jumping kicks, Smith is now landing knees and both guys are very game in this final third round. Smith lands a nice straight right on Arthur and both give it there all. (For a debut fighter Theo Arthur has a great set of tools to go far).

MICHAEL OLIVER INDEPENDENT FIGHTER 0-3 CHRIS ASTLEY TROJAN FREE FIGHTERS 1-1

Round 1 Chris Astley comes out and gains the TD landing in side control, Oliver had Astley’s leg trapped, Astley landing knees into Olivers side which breaks his leg grip. Astley moves into full mount, raining punches and Elbows with intent, referee Ron Frith steps in and stops the fight.

SHANE RILEY BROTHERHOOD MMA 2-3 CHRIS HIPKISS FURY MMA 6-5

Round 1 Chris Hipkiss comes straight in with a great punch to Riley, both struggle for dominance then Riley gets Hipkiss against the cage and throws some hard knees and foot stomps, Riley takes the action to the ground. Hipkiss gets out and lands in side control then moves to mount landing some shots all the while Riley is well aware of Hipkiss’s arm as he is looking for an armbar for which he gets and succeeds.

UIC11 EVENT REVIEW – BENSKIN VS COOK 2 at GL1 FEB 22ND

`Ultimate Impact 11 held their first event of 2014 Benskin VS Cook 2 at their new location of GL1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester on Saturday 22^nd February to an electrified, pumped up full house.

With six K1 fights on the card including four female K1 fights and seven MMA fights, Paul Sutherland and Dan Richards had definitely pulled this one out of the bag yet again with each show just getting better and better.

The main event was all about the Middleweight Title re-match between Lenny Benskin and Tommy Cook, after the first outing ended in a DQ for Lenny Benskin in which Tommy Cook gained The Middleweight Title; it was there in the centre of the cage both men agreed to an instant re-match and tonight was the night.

Referee’s Ron Frith and Leon Roberts were the third men in the cage and MC for the night was Darren Rees.

It was time to get the first fight underway and the atmosphere of the crowd in the new home of UIC, you could already start to feel the warm, electric vibe.

UNIFIED AMATEUR MMA 70kg 3X3 MINS

JACK PRICE FURY MMA 0-1 JACK ‘THE LORD’SHORE TILLERY COMBAT 2-0

Rnd 1 Both men are straight of out the cage but it’s Shore who gains the TD and quickly moves into side control and then top position raining blows on Price who is trying to defend the flurry of shots and whilst doing so turns onto his stomach. Shore is controlling the action from the outset, and then sealing Price’s fate with a RNC at the 2min 3sec mark of Round 1.

K1 AMATEUR FEMALE 50KG 3×2 MINS

KATIE ELKOVA GLOUCESTER MARTIAL ARTS 1-0 PAULINA MALINA TROJAN FREE FIGHTERS DEBUT

Rnd 1 Elkova straight in with kicks in this fast paced opening few seconds. Malina pushing forward as the aggressor and drops Elkova, then Malina comes in with a lovely superman punch using her clean timed punches well. Elkova moving forward using her punches and making good use of her sidekicks.

Rnd 2 Both women come out fast, Malina coming forward with her punches and starting to use more of her leg kicks, Elkova Is starting to come into her own as both women trade alike, Malina with a great spinning back fist, Elkova moving forward and making this a two-sided affair.

Rnd 3 Elkova straight in with a one, two combination followed by Malina landing a spinning back fist and a flying knee in this fast paced round. Both women have a sense of urgency about them in this final round with neither giving an inch as the sound of clappers go for the last ten seconds Malina drops Elkova. K1 AMATEUR FEMALE 55KG 3X2MINS

ZOWIE TREVENA REVOULTION GYM 0-2 LEA FENDT EAST WEST MUAY THAI 0-1

RND 1 Both women come out fast; Trevena making use of angles whilst Fendt is stalking down her opponent, Trevena is in and out, circling off to the side as Fendt is still finding her range and rhythm but also landing some awesome kicks and punches in the process. Trevena has landed her own shots this first round and it is definitely not a one sided affair.

Rnd 2 Trevena is out first and lands with a front kick for which Fendt replies with a brutal sidekick, Trevena drops to her knees in agony. Referee Ron Frith checks Trevena is able to carry on – all the while Fendt’s corner are shouting at the ref for allowing ‘too much time’ and Trevena’s corner are telling her to ‘suck it up’ but the look on Trevena’s face tells a different story! With Fendt knowing she had done damage, she finds her rhythm coming forward landing brutal knees and kicks just as it signals for the end of the round.

Rnd 3 Fendt having found her earlier momentum and rhythm she is straight back where she left off throwing some brutal leg kicks and knees then threw an awesome head kick which KO’d Trevena at 1min 01 sec Rnd 3. WINNER LEA FENDT VIA KO

CADRE ‘CJ’ ABDULAFUR GLOUCESTER MARTIAL ARTS 0-1 MATT FIGLAK TROJAN FREE FIGHTERS 2-1

Rnd1 Abulafur is straight out with punches, Figlak attempts an TD but Abdulafur pulls guard, Figlak in side control then gains top position where both men are working battling it out, Figlak being the dominant one with top position but Abulafur also working hard from bottom position.

Rnd 2 Figlak straight out and gains the TD, working hard from mount only for Abulafur to get back to his feet briefly and Figlak take him down again although whilst doing so Abulafur has made the error in leaving his arm out and Figlak capilatizes on this but to no avail. Figlak gains another TD and continues to control Abulafur from mount.

Rnd 3 Figlak comes out punching and gets the TD, working from mount controlling Abdulafur this is far by means a one sided affair as Abdulafur is holding his own in this well evenly matched fight.

Rnd 2 Sansom comes out and lands an awesome high kick but its Harthill that is like a man possessed, then at 1min 16 secs Harthill KO’s Sansom. WINNER MATT HARTHILL VIA KO

Rnd 1 Both men opened up with exchanges of kicks, Wallace gains the TD whilst Grant is working of his back looking for a submission, sees a small opening for an arm triangle and attempts to secure the position but to no avail.

Rnd 2 Grant opens the round with kicks and Wallace returns the favour an awesome sidekick as he does Grant comes rushing forward, there is a scramble of some sorts, I am yelling Wallace watch for the guillotine, next you know, Grant seals the deal with the Guillotine at 0.25 secs Rnd 2.

SAMMY DONNELLY COMBAT WARRIORS 2-2 HELEN HARPER ANDY ROBERTS BJJ DEBUT

Rnd 1 Both women come our fierce, with pure intention, working there kicks and solid knees whilst in the clinch position, Donnelly lands a lovely spinning back fist whilst Harper appears to be keeping it basic and trying to find her range in this first round.

Rnd 2 Both women come straight out firing shots at one another; Donnelly is really mixing it up well, Harper has now found her range and is landing more of her strikes on target but that is not to say Donnelly is not in this fight, quite the opposite. Donnelley is coming back with counter punches and knees of her own, making this a very even fight at this point.

Rnd 3 Harper has found her rhythm and Donnelly appears to have been caught in Harpers clinches and been dealt some of Harpers knees, just when you think Donnelley is backed up against the cage she comes back and dominates the last 15 seconds or so of this very evenly fought fight.

Rnd 1 Great opening round for both men, both men are feeling each other out, Sakhizedeh teeps Jones straight in the face but this does not faze Jones, he is still moving forward throughout the first round and neither man is not backing down.

Rnd 2 Sakhizedeh straight in and shoots, gains the TD, working in top position as Jones is moving back to his corner against the cage on his back then is back to his feet. Sakhizedeh shoots in for another TD just before the end of the round finishes.

Rnd 3 Sakhizedeh comes out and get Jones in a great Arm Drag Wrestling move for which the crowd go wild, Jones is straight back to his feet, Sakhizedeh has Jones against the cage working for a position but to no avail. The action moves towards the centre of the cage, Sakhizedeh shows more of his great pedigree background in wrestling. Jones puts up a terrific fight but he was just out wrestled on the night. Rnd 1 Finney straight in with a one, two combination and knocks Evans down Finney on top raining blows. Evans manages to get back up and both men are going back at it, there’s a scramble and Evans attempts an guillotine, Finney escapes by cage walking – but you really had to see this ‘technique’ he pulled off to escape back to his feet. As soon as they are back to their feet neither man is backing down, it again goes back to the ground and both men are fighting hard for Top position, Evans sees Finney has his arm out during one of their many ‘roll’s to gain Top position and takes it at 4min 24 secs Rnd 1

Rnd 1 Both men come out with a striking clinic and neither man is backing down. Kaufman drops Smith in the last seconds of the rounds with a brutal leg kick.

Rnd 2 Smith lands a brutal leg kick that drops Kaufman who does a celebratory jump, which is a bit premature as Kaufman recovers and comes back fighting with a lot more intent.

Rnd 3 Smith lands a great right that dropped Kaufman but Kaufman is not shying away and is still pushing the action forward in this action packed fight.

Rnd 1 Bousiff straight out and catches Astley with a left hook which drops him, Bousiff is straight on Astley to finish the job in hand, landing several shots before referee Leon Roberts calls a stop to the fight at 0.19secs. WINNER ADAM BOUSIFF VIA TKO

K1 FEMALE 58KG TITLE ELIMIATOR FIGHT 3X2MINS

LAURA HANDY FURY MMA 2-0 ANYA BAKER THE MAT ACADAMEY 2-1

Rnd 1 Both women come out fast, Handy finding her target with her long reach and constant jabs and punches early on. Baker being the more cautious fighter and using her kicks to start with. Handy gets Baker with one of her awesome knees and drops Baker in this opening round.

Rnd 2 Baker is out first and is using her kicks to reach Handy and it’s clear you can see Baker’s kicks have been damaging as I notice a big red mark on Handy’s left outside thigh. Handy is pushing forward with her awesome punching making Baker work against the cage; this is a great display of who wants this title eliminator the most in this second round.

Rnd 3 Handy straight out and in with a one, two combination followed by her awesome knees and even more punches, making Baker work off the cage. This is not a one sided affair Baker is giving Handy her own share of kicks and punches which seems as Handy is coming under fire a little in the dying seconds of the final round, as she has Baker against the cage wall. Both women give it their all in this all-out war and leave everything in the cage.

PRO MMA 84KG MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

LENNY BENSKIN BROTHERHOOD MMA 0-1 TOMMY COOK IRON MANN GYM 3-0

Rnd 1 Cook shoots in and gets Benskin down, Cook on top and looking for a position all the while Cook is grinding out punches to Benskin, it gets back to their feet and Benskin is raining in some short sharp elbows to Cook’s head. Cook then gets Benskin to the ground and throws his own punches on Benskin, showing just how much this Title fight means to both men. Benskin has managed to stop quite a few of Cook’s TD’s and only two have been successful in this opening, exiting round.

Rnd 2 Cook again shoots in and Benskin defends the TD perfectly and replies with short harsh elbows to Cook’s head. Cook has Benskin against the cage and is throwing knees, and for a brief, second it did appear Benskin was in a bit of trouble but Benskin rolled out of it, Cook got straight back on Benskin raining blow after blow and even some nasty elbows. Benskin is covering up at this point and Cook rolls him over and attempts a RNC to no avail. Benskin turtles up and weathers the storm and the remainder of the round.

Rnd 3 Cook comes straight out and in for the TD for which he briefly gets as Benskin is straight out into side control against the cage. Benskin trying to land punches but Cook has hold of his wrist and therefore gains wrist control although a few of Benskin punches manages to get through, Cook gets out and gets Benskins back only for Benskin to roll to his front. Cook now in Top position, both trying to gain punches, Benskin gets Cook rolled over and he is now on Top in this ‘topsey turvey’ last few moments of this exciting Title Fight. It is clear to say that neither man wants to lose this fight. This fight had everything from start to finish and both men left everything in the cage.

Last post for 2013 – A lot of Thank You’s and some pictures :)

It’s been a challenging year for me but I wouldn’t change it for one second, after all I got to do what so many of you still want to do and I have achieved all of it in the six months that I started this harsh challenge – which fell into my lap purely by coincidence (you will have to refer back to my very first blog read about that one)!

I will however give a big shout out to the person who got me started not only in writing my own blog but who introduced me to what I currently do, and that is Jonathan Millard, for whom I am forever grateful to.

What alot of people, more than likely do not know about me, is that I have been in the ‘combat sport industry’ for just over 20 years now, so I have legitmately worked my way up the ladder – although, it’s fine for you to believe whatever you choose to believe, I personally don’t give a shit, again those that really know me, know that also!

I got to cover local grass root shows, which to me I have always been a great fan of and will always take time out of my schedule to go cover them as much as I can, I covered Pain Pit 3 times, Ultimate Impact, Into The Cage, Neilson Promotions White Collar Boxing then I also covered Cage Warriors, BAMMA and UFC Manchester, not bad even if I do say so myself!

Then a great event happend for UKMMA – The UKMMA Expo in Manchester and I got to be part of the only Media Team that had Access All Areas and when I say that, I truly mean that; not like all the other Media people that came in, the team I was with we were set up in the ‘Green Room’ with all our equipment and at one point their was one great surreal moment that I for one will never ever forget 🙂

It was a great run event by Darren Sherlock and Paul Crossley and of course Darren’s wife Michelle, all timed perefectly for when Michael Bisping would be in the UK, Manchester as it happens (his own town) and just after being announced he would be facing Mark Munoz, here also in Manchester in October (unfortuntaly due to Michael needing eye surgery he was forced to withdraw from the bout and Lyoto Machida replaced him)!

There were UFC athletes, Guest athletes, Guest speakers, Seminars to train with some of the Guest athletes and stalls for the MMA community to come together and show there products of to the public; also there was the stall for SAFE MMA – for which I personally went over to Izzy Carnwath and spoke to her to see SAFE MMA was all about, how promotions could get involved and WHY they should. I had such a better understanding afterwards.

There was also a big NoGi BJJ competiton on, running throughout the Sunday which was awesome and six females took part amongst the hundreds of men.

At the show I managed to Video Interview (yes that was a very first for me) The Legend Ian ‘The Machine’ Freeman straight after his MMA Seminar – let me tell you know this guy is 100% gentleman when talking to him, Ian made my first video interview effortless (well I thought) 🙂

Leigh Remedios Interview and Into The Cage 8 – The Uprising Event Review

I managed to catch up with Leigh Remedios before his up and coming fight with Danny Welsh on May 18th at Into The Cage 8 The Uprising in Andover

First things first, since coming back out of retirement you’ve become a father to a gorgeous little boy Connor, brother to Logan and you’ve also married your long suffering girlfriend Sam, how’s that all going for you?

Everything is great. I had a practise run marriage where I learned a lot and upgraded pretty significantly 😉

How does Sam feel about you being back in competitive action, as back in 2010, I recall you saying America is where you would like your career to be, also to travel and fight in Japan? Having Connor as well as Logan has the career path changed directions for you?

Sam just kinda accepts it. She doesn’t really care, other than I get more irritable with the pressure of competing and cutting weight. I’m not sure what I want to with fighting at the moment – I have learned a lot from dropping to Bantam and I have to put it all into practise.

What made you decide to go down to Bantamweight back in 2009 after your loss to Robbie Olivier?

I made feather very easily and guys like Ashleigh Grimshaw and Paul Reed were going back in around 74-75kg. It takes a lot of eating and weight training, as well as cutting out cardio, for me to keep my weight that high. I’m about the same size as the bigger bantams anyway.

I’d do feather if the right fight came up.

Your fight with Carl Fawcett was your comeback fight after retiring back in 2011, what were your reasons for retiring and what enticed you back this year?

I don’t want to take anything away from my opponents by making excuses so all I can say is that I didn’t enjoy competing. However, I’m a competitor at heart and I still feel physically able, so I don’t want to have any regrets.

Coming back into competitive MMA, you must have a new game plan, as in where you want to be in this sport now that it is evolving and being more socially accepted?

Not really, I just want to fight and perform to my ability. Once I do, I’ll think more about where I sit in the grand scheme of it all and what direction to follow.

It appears from the many interviews I have read that you’re not in this sport for the money and you like a good scrap, that said what is your motivation for you to keep on fighting?

I like to test myself and my ego means I have to impress myself, hahaha. I won’t do it forever – I’ll stop when I physically lose my edge.

Reflecting back on your last fight at Made For The Cage against Carl Fawcett, the result, including why it didn’t go the way you wanted it to go, can you pin point where it went wrong in and outside the cage?

Yes I can but I won’t out of respect for Carl. No one likes excuses.

You’re going to be facing Danny Welsh at Into The Cage 8 The Uprising in Andover on May 18th, how did this come about, as in was this a planned/scheduled fight, this is looking to be a busy year for you? Is this how you want your return to the cage to be, busy?

I was looking for a fight to keep busy around end of May/early June and a friend of mine spoke to the promoters on my behalf.

You’ve cornered against Danny, when he faced Paul Reed back in 2011, do you feel this gives you an advantage going into this fight?

Maybe a little. I know a bit about how Danny fights, what his strengths and weaknesses are likely to be and I’ve seen first hand how he reacts under pressure.

Danny Welsh is a very much under estimated fighter, with a lot of cage experience for someone of his age, is there any aspect in his overall game that you will be seeking out?

It’s no secret that he is a dangerous striker with a good clinch but with less experience on the ground. This gives me an advantage standing up because he has to be wary of takedowns, whereas I don’t care if he tries to take me down. But at the end of the day, it’s a fight and a lot of theories and strategies can go out the window once you’re punched in the mouth.

You’re also scheduled to meet James Pennington for the ShockNAwe BantamWeight Title on July 27th in Portsmouth. Pennington has just come of a great win on Cage Warriors 53 against James Doolan (who you also fought back in 2010), did you see that fight? If so what did you think and can you see any weaknesses that you could exploit into your own game plan?

I did not see that fight. However, I’m quite a different opponent than James Doolan. Hopefully, I may match up a little better stylistically.

Is there anything different in your training that you will be doing to make sure you come away with The Belt or is it a case of sticking to what works best for you?

No, I will keep it the same training wise. I have a good team to work with and it’s a case of getting fit and working the game plan.

So far in you fighting career, which fight for you, do you regard as a personal favourite, and why?

I think my rivalry with Jean Silva. They were just fun scraps with someone of a similar level.

Into the cage 8 – The Uprising Event Review

On May 18th Into The Cage held their 8th event in Andover for what promised to be an explosive night of action and I was there Cageside to witness all the action.

The show has 17 scheduled fight’s to take place, which includes 2 grappling matches, 12 semi-pro fights, 3 pro fights which includes 2 title fights, 1 middleweight and 1 bantamweight title fight.

First up is a GRAPPLING contest, which for those of you who are not familiar with the rules is 1 x 5 min round and as many submission’s you can make in those 5 minutes.

Ben Hodgson VS Chris Heaney

Ben is doing a great job defending, having had his back taken by Chris but has managed to turn into him to get a sweep and land on top. Chris however is managing to sweep Ben every time from side control. Ben’s takedown’s are unstoppable and goes in with conviction. Ben jump’s guard and goes for a guillotine, Chris defends and goes for a North/South Choke, both guys are very technical and kept working hard for the full 5 minutes.

Marcus Mitchell VS Ben Griffiths
Round 1 – Both guys come out with flying a knee which ended in a collision of willpower, as they both tried to establish their dominance. As they separate Marcus immediately comes back swinging and rocks Ben taking him down to the canvas. Marcus seized the opportunity to get some ground and pound work in, whilst Ben is defending he gives up his back and then has to defend the submission attempts. Coming to a stale mate the ref stands both fighters up. Ben goes for a takedown but his back was bent and going in head first Marcus capitalised and got a standing guillotine.

Back to GRAPPLING 1 X 5 min Rnd

Matt Whyton VS Ben Howard

Round 1 – Both fighters came in looking for the takedown but it was Ben who got there first with a takedown against the cage giving him side control. Matt’s guard however was very active and he managed to regain some control forcing Ben to get the pass once more. Getting the pass Ben quickly gains control with knee on belly and working his way into mount however working quickly Matt gets the sweep and ends up in half mount. These boys are pretty active on the ground the fight is captivating as they go back and forth fighting for dominance.

Ben gets a deep half guard and takes mount. From a high mount position Ben is working for an arm to open for a submission attempt however Matt is keeping it tight. Whilst Matt was very active he just couldn’t seem to gain any control and Ben whilst being more dominant he couldn’t find the submission.

Josh Lee VS Mark Wade

Round 1 – Both fighters come out of their corners firing off shots to establish each other’s respect. Mark closes the distance to clinch up, landing some significant knees to the body of Josh. Capitalising on his position Mark pushes Josh up against the cage and continued to land knees causing the ref to stop the fight.

Now onto the Semi-Pro’s for the next few fights 3 x 4 min rounds

Cray Sams VS Victor Kmec

Round 1 – It’s an exciting start as Victor lands a big double leg takedown and immediately gets mount, however Cray looking the part gets the sweep, but overdoing it slightly Victor capitalises on the momentum and rolls back into mount. Unable to gain control over Cray however ends up in a scramble and Cray gains guard forcing Victor to defend an armbar attempt. During his defence Victor steps over Cray’s head allowing him to go for an attempted reverse triangle which Cray was able to defend and gives Cray the opportunity to take it back to standing. Cray clinched up quickly and lands some excellent knees to the body of Victor as the bell sounds for the end of the round.

Round 2 – Victor lands a big right with which Ben answers with knees; Victor manages to get a takedown giving him mount position. It is very rare you witness a comical moment in a fight however if there was ever a moment this would be it. During Cray’s attempts of protecting himself at all times Victor catches a hold of Cray’s gloves and gets his fingers caught in the glove (although I for one am not falling for that trick in the book as being accidental), well experienced Referee Dan Movahedi seeing this happen a couple of times slaps the forearm of Victor twice and gives him a warning not to do this again. It reminded me of a naughty child being told off by their parent. Then as Victor clearly had dominance of the situation he looks at the ref for the stoppage to which Dan replies, “I’ve not seen anything yet.” Victors only response to this was to hit Cray somewhat significantly harder.

Nick Woolridge VS James Lindsey

Okay before I go into this fight, I have been pretty vocal on my opinions regarding the weight difference, Nick weighed in at 67.9kg and James weighed in at 73.6kg. Nick is a Debut fighter and James has had 2 fights already, personally I feel this shouldn’t have gone ahead based on the weigh in results. There’s a 66kg and 70kg division let alone the u74kg this one was apparently scheduled for – that being said I guess the onus has to lie with the fighter’s management team, ensuring fighter’s safety is put first at all times.

Round 1 – Both boys have started the round by landing some significant shots however James is a heavy hitter with some destructive knees. Once clinched up James’ knees seem brutal but Nick manages to hold his own in this battle and is giving James a good fight. James goes for a takedown landing him in mount where he managed to hold on to a warrior of a fighter in Nick and secured a guillotine choke.

Ricky Mitchell VS Kyle Gray
Round 1 – Ricky comes in with a flying kick to the chest from the start and jumps to a standing guard attempting a guillotine which fails big time, Kyle slams Ricky to the canvas and passes his guard. In a scramble Ricky gets to his feet and Kyle gets in another big takedown driving Ricky to the canvas yet again. This is proving to be a battle of a technical game plan (Kyle) vs a Scrappy No game plan (Ricky). In the scramble Kyle gets a reverse triangle.

Semi-pros

Wayne Alden VS Adam Little

First thing I noted was both fighters are lanky which in my opinion makes for a great fight with having a great range which they should use to their advantage at keeping their opponent at the end of their punches.

Round 1 – Sizing each other up, it is clear both fighters aren’t about to dive into this blindly. Wayne looked like the aggressor but Adam was simply looking for his opening and landed a great side kick. Unable to bring his foot back fast enough Wayne grabs a hold and is looking for the takedown but Adam comes in with a right cross forcing Wayne to let go. Adam seeing his second opening goes for the takedown and lands himself in mount where he quickly finishes with a brutal barrage of head shots causing the ref to stop the fight.

Winner Adam Little 0.48 secs Rnd 1 Via TKO due to GnP

I caught up with Adam after his fight and he had this to say…

“My coaches came up with a game plan, which is what I used and stuck too. It turned out to be effective also I was really happy to finish the fight so quickly and in that fashion. I am looking forward to getting back in there again soon. I would like to say a huge thank you to my g/f Kally, cornermen, Jamie and Harry, Gracie barra Swindon, friends and family who made the effort to come watch me.” I awarded this #TKO of the Night

Paul Collings VS Lee Maslin

Round 1 – As with all fights the first few seconds/minutes are spent sizing up your opponent, looking for an opening which Lee found in the form of a takedown. Paul was able to push against the cage to stand back up and coming back into the fight with a big right causing Lee to go down to the canvas to immediately defend himself from the ground however it was clear that he was shaken up. In the scramble Paul sinks in a guillotine.

Steve Hurst VS Issac Griffiths

Round 1 – Steve came out his corner with some heavy punches but it was Isaac with the takedown. Steve counteracts with a reversal getting side control – scarf hold on Isaac. From the scarf hold Steve is able to trap Isaac’s near arm between his legs for the armbar.

Shey Roberts VS John Edwards

Now it was time what appeared to me to be one of the most arrogant fighters, fight upon us. So I’m hoping for less arrogance and more technical ability then we should have a good fight on our hands, but hey who am I to kid we are dealing with Shey Roberts here and he’s not gonna stop being, cocky or arrogant anytime soon, so here goes……

Round 1 – Shey came out kicking landing three hard kicks to the thigh of John Edwards. Shey then proceeds to punish John with a barrage of punches and solid shots. Not to say John didn’t land any, however Shey was unstoppable. Shey closed the distance at will causing John to defend a guillotine attempt which he survived, however Shey being relentless goes straight back in for the kill and makes a second attempt at the guillotine. Unable to finish Shey uses the position for a reversal sweep, flicking John over and rolling right in mount. Unable to secure complete control John manages to come up to his knees in a scramble but with precision and clarity Shey, now standing, steps around and takes John’s back. Unable to defend this John gets caught out with a Rear Naked Choke.

Just to clarify there is a fine line between being Confident and Arrogant, and this is where Shey falls rather short!

Andy Bega VS Ethan Charlesworth

Round 1 – Andy came out driving Ethan to the cage while firing off punches, immediately testing Ethan’s ability to keep it together in the heat of the battle. Clinched up Ethan, reverses against the cage, getting the takedown and lands himself in mount. During the ground and pound, Andy gets low under Ethan’s hips unfortunately giving up an arm. Ethan ceasing the opportunity secures a tight armbar.

Mike Daguiar VS Ben Harrison

Round 1 – Ben went in for a takedown, however Mike defended and stayed on his feet. While still on his knees, Mike throws punches at Ben, Ben should have stood back up but it was clear he was rocked. Regaining composure, Ben gets a sweep, however now finds himself in Mike’s guard and a tight armbar.

Josh Skinner VS Chris Bucksey

Round 1 – Chris comes out and punches Josh rocking him, giving Chris the takedown he wanted, however Josh regains his guard allowing him to defend Chris’ punches. Chris however is still able to do damage from within Josh’s guard punishing him.
Chris slides into half-mount pulling him free for side control. Round ends with Chris landing punishing blows from side control.

Round 2 – Both guys come out firing punches but Chris gets Josh up against the cage and goes for the takedown. In mount Chris works for an armbar which was well defended by Josh, however Josh is just unable to gain ground. As he’s defending one thing Chris is coming back with ten other problems for Josh to deal with. Being out grappled Josh sees the end of the second round.

Round 3 – Chris comes in with a great combo of a side kick, superman punch closing the distance for a flurry of punches causing Josh to make some bad decisions. Jumping guard in the cage is never a great idea but Josh jumps guard and pulls his opponent to the canvas. Now this was his chance to capitalise on the position but landed in half guard and his guillotine attempt failed giving Chris an arm to work for an armlock.

Leigh Remedios VS Craig Allen

Firstly I would like to say this fight was originally scheduled for Leigh to fight Danny Welsh who pulled out on Early Friday Morning – so to get a late replacement at such short notice is really great that this fight can still go ahead.

Round 1 – Leigh came out ready for this fight and it showed, Leigh got stuck straight in, shot for a single leg and during the takedown wrapped up Craig’s right leg and sat through causing Craig’s knee to twist and pop.

Winner Leigh Remedios 0.23 secs Rnd1 via verbal tap out – ref stoppage

I caught up with Leigh after his fight and this is what he had to say…

“I’m glad I got the “W” but I’m gutted Craig got injured. I appreciate him stepping in on short notice and didn’t want that to happen.”

Wojtek Rudnik vs Danny Brennan

Round 1 – Wojtek comes in with big punches as Danny went in for the takedown rocking Danny he briefly goes to the canvas. Composing himself fast Danny gets to his feet and gets a big take down, unable to clear the legs however he lands in Wojtek’s guard. Unable to work his guard however Danny rains down punches from inside the guard. Danny now on his feet, Wojtek refusing to stand Danny continues landing some big shots and is relentless with these powerfull shots, but it’s clear that Wojtek just isn’t engaging which forced the ref to stand them back up. This gave Danny the opening and it was his turn to rock Wojtek with knees, flooring Wojtek and in the scramble for control, Danny outworking Wojtek all the time, finally Wojtek gives up his back, Danny jumps round to his back to attempt a standing gulliotine , as Wojtek goes to the canvas Danny changes and gets a RNC.

I caught up with Danny after his awesome win, who had this to say to me…

“I was generally pleased with my performance though a touch disappointed that I got dropped in the initial exchange but I managed to compose myself and execute my game plan “ I awarded this fight #FOTN

Mike Cutting VS Aaron Blackwell

With very little engagement from Mike Cutting it could be argued that the rule of timidity could come into play however his cockiness and that smug look on his face I was glad that the fight went the full five rounds. For a title fight I must say that I was completely unimpressed with this fighter who clearly believes in his own hype only to lose all five rounds and a well-deserved win to Aaron. While Aaron played a well thought out technical game plan to his advantage, I couldn’t help but get frustrated at Mike’s cockiness and shrugging each time Aaron landed a blowing kick to the head, body or legs. What infuriated me even more was Mike’s total lack of respect for his opponent and took a moment to look and pay attention to Aaron’s corner during the fight giving Aaron yet another opportunity to land a head kick. I think he should have paid more attention to his own corner. You would have thought that all those kicks would have grabbed his attention but unfortunately not. . It seemed that only in the fourth round he finally made an attempt at a takedown but like a bull vs matador, he came in charging and Aaron simply sidestepped steering Mike away from him and towards the cage. If this young man’s game is on the ground then you need to close the distance and get the job done, not stand there making those stupid faces waving your hands in the air not doing a damn thing while your opponent kicks the crap out of you.

Well done to Aaron for winning the title and belt for a well-executed fight against an opponent who in my opinion wasn’t worthy to get into the cage with you, especially after not being in the cage for two years yourself, you totally dominated the centre of the cage from the start and the pace of the fight and you fought the fight in which you wanted to fight, you stuck to your plan, it worked, you didn’t get dragged into Mike’s games, you kept your cool and won.

Catching up on My Events From May 4th..Cage Warriors #54 oh & I mention Cage Warriors #49 Experience

So again I have failed in my attempt to kept my own blog updated but that’s not due to me being lazy, I’ve actually been real busy as stated in my last brief blog and its got busier, which is all good for me (although I just have to get myself into a routine of updating this site).

On May 4th I got the chance to go and review Cage Warriors #54 who were having there first ever UK Arena Event at The Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff for Front Row MMA whom I do lot of work for, so having previously been to Cage Warriors #49 in Cardiff which was held at St Davids Hall, I was wondering if the promotion had managed to “fix” its first impression’s it had on me, which to be honest were not of the standard I personally would of thought that one of UK & Europe’s leading promotion should have.

Ok since were on the subject and I didn’t have a blog back in October when I attended Cage Warriors 49, I’m going to address it now, better late than never, after all if you don’t know where your going wrong how are you ever going to try to improve!

I was really excited at the thought of seeing Rosi Sexton kick Shelia Gaff’s butt up close and in person, but as we all know, that fight did not go ahead and I’m not going to re-hash that one out, Rosi has now rightly moved on to the biggest stage, that being The UFC which is awesome and I cant wait to watch her Debut.

Myself and a couple of friends bought “cageside” seats as we like to be close to the action, and to me “cageside” means floor level, next to the cage – right? Well we arrived to the venue and found out “cageside” here was not floor level infact it was as high as the cage is and seated so you could not see a good metre of action within the cage itself, also our side had no screens what so ever, so for everyone that watches at home know you get the VT footage of every fighter that comes out and a bit about them, well just our side didn’t – the other side though! I will say this and will always say this the fights themselves never disappoint, although I did feel there was lack of respect when the Main Event came on and the venue emptied out, not that this small event was sold out by any stretch, I mean seriously you people missed a great fight and what are you all talking about now PENDRED!!! LOL

The Motorpoint Arena, Ive been there plenty of times before recently having taking my little boy to WWE Smackdown or was it RAW, I’m not sure but I do know John Cena was fighting so that made me a happy mummy 🙂

I arrived at the venue for 5pm as requested by a member of Cage Warriors Senior Promotion Team only to be told at the Box Office that I had to walk all the way around the back of the building to Security to see if I could gain access (here we go again, first impressions are already shit and out the window, can it get any worse), so myself and Marie walk around the outside of the arena to gain access to the security hub; Marie is the competition winner who won 2 tickets and the chance to walk out Danny ‘Hot Chocolate’ Roberts who was the Co-Main event, as it happens me and Marie are friends on Twitter, having been a last minute competition no one was available to go with her so she drove to me and in turn I drove us to Cardiff; Were at the security gate explaining who we are, fair enough he’s a nice friendly guy but the person he needs is off site so were stood waiting around (this dose not do anything for my first impressions what so ever), then Danny Roberts comes out – Random -good timing though and takes us in, now he is one nice guy, we go up to ‘make shift’ promotion office which is situated on the balcony seating of the arena, Danny introduces us, names ticked off but wait they’ve run out of wrist bands?!? really?!? “We will come and find you when I can get some more” Ok , then me and Marie are left to our own devices…so we go having a look around the venue of course I notice Frank Trigg straight away and being SO early as pointed out by yet another member of senior promotional staff I decided to have a photo opportunity – well it was on my own time, and yes Frank is a real lovely person 🙂

I also had a bit of fun and banter with Marc Goddard and new (well new back then) Cage Warriors signee Tom Breese, hence some photo’s going around on Twitter of me and Tom, he is also such a Sweet, Lovely, but painfully Shy guy – he’s going to have to get used to not being so shy tho which is what I was attempting to do, much to Marc’s enjoyment and encouragement, but it didnt work lol

Anyway it turned out I had to go and chase my own wrist band up (seemed no one was bothered – altho they would be the first to check when i’m wondering around when the doors are opened to the public), as it happens also they decided to sit “press” up in the balcony where my view was obscured by the lighting rig, so you couldn’t see the nitty gritty of the ground work on the big screen and for sure couldn’t see a thing in the cage, so again Cage Warriors fail big time for all the reasons I have stated, let alone their was no atmosphere where I was sat but then again what do you expect in a half empty arena!

I will never so far fault any of the fights that Cage Warriors put on, they are exactly what the fans want but if you want to be Europes & UK’s No1 leading promotion in my opinion you’ve got to do more than just deliver great fights, if your going to be paying to go to a event, to me its about the whole experience, I’ve been to enough events to know what counts and what makes a great experience for everyone not just who you pick and choose! yes I can probably see you some of you saying but I didn’t pay to go to this Cage Warriors, then I refer back to when I went back to Cage Warriors #49 as a paying customer, views are exactly the same, and if your not willing to speak up about your own views like I said at the beginning, how are you supposed to learn and grow to improve?

So its time for me and Marie to leave but not before we go and get a picture with Danny Roberts who at this point is getting swamped by family and friends, we are also being asked to leave by security altho we really need the toilet and we ask to use them but they say there closed – really, so I actually used my brain for once – yep at the end of a evening too, we just went back upstairs (cos we had our wristbands on) and used the toilets up there, well we had a hr n half drive to my house, it had to be done!

So were just about to approach the car park and there’s a bunch of people before us at the pay machine, not taking that much notice thinking its probably just a few loud guys, when I do take note its Marc Goddard and Tom Breese with a couple of friends, and Marie wants a picture with them, I have to chuckle to myself, then Marc’s friend says for me to get in the picture (Marc hinting for me to stand next to Tom), its one of those where you had to be there after what was going on earlier in the night, of all the people to randomly bump into after it had to be those two!

Anyway Tom Breese I will take you up on that offer of a email Interview still at some point and I’m glad my colleagues at Front Row MMA managed to pin you down for a chat on Camera but if any of you missed that here is the link 🙂

Pain Pit – New Breed

I arrived at Newport’s Leisure Centre with anticipation having always had Pain Pit events scheduled in my diary and now I had no reason not to go and the timing was exactly right.

The Opening fight of the night in the Amateur Level 3 Rules (No Headshots) (2 x 3mins) saw Welterweights Mark Turnville ( Trojan Cheltenham) against Jack ‘The Tank’ Shore (Tillery Combat) who seemed to be a crowd favourite here, Turnville opened up with some good leg kicks, whilst Shore went in for the clinch position, knowing exactly he wanted this on the ground fast, Turnville managed to get a big body slam to Shore who kept his composure attempting to secure a Triangle only for Turnville to be saved by the Bell, the 2nd rnd was pretty much the same as the 1st with a dominant Shore maintaining Top position & control with good body shots & another triangle attempt even taking Turnville’s back in the final seconds. Winner by UD Jack ‘The Tank’ Shore

In the 2nd fight of the night we saw the Light Heavyweights Sam Cousins from Weston-Super-Mare (Team Savage) against Jamie Curtis (Tillery Combat)

Sam Cousins starts the action by getting the early takedown & into top position for most of the 1st rnd action, until Jamie Curtis manages to get back to his feet both men are standing. Cousins is throwing low kicks & Curtis is catching most of them, Cousins gets another takedown in rnd 2 with both men very game in gaining control on the floor, Cousins manages to get Curtis into a Rear Naked Choke for the last 15 seconds of this fight and he hung on in their as the bell went. Winner by UD Sam Cousins

In the Third fight we saw Middleweight contenders Dan Hamer (David Round) against Ian McLeod (Tillery Combat)

Both men come out fast & trading punches & kicks McLeod gets the early takedown & a guillotine attempt, Hamer manages to get out, both men back to standing & trading punches, McLeod clips Hamer sending him to the floor, McLeod seizing the moment attempts a armbar on Hamer who manages to hold on till end of the rnd. Start of rnd 2 McLeod gets Hamer with a great inside leg kick which sends him to the ground, McLeod again struggles to gain top position which now sees him on his back setting up a triangle, Hamer submits Winner McLeod 2.15 rnd 2 Triangle Choke

Fourth fight of the night and were on to Amateur Level 2 (Headshots Standing Only) ( 3×3 mins)

And the atmosphere was electric to what appeared to be a sold out Newport Leisure Centre again I can see why Pain Pit was living up to its reputation and we were only on the 4th fight of the night.

Welterweights Daniel Owens (Chris Rees ) against Ryan Legge (Tillery Combat)

It was a great start by both guys, fast paced both exchanging shots with Owens taking control in the first part of the action, Legge soon got to work on the ground but decided to let Owens back up to his feet with both men exchanging blows as it’s nearing the end of rnd 1 Legge gets Owens with a good Right Hook, bell goes. As we start rnd 2 Legge took Owens straight to the ground looking to take him out with a Triangle choke & Owens Tapped Winner Legge 1.06 rnd 2 Triangle Choke

Fifth fight another welterweight match between Daniel Griffiths (Vendetta) against Patrick Magourlic (David Round)

Both men come out fast but its Griffiths who is pushing forward both men are exchanging kicks & punches, Magourlic takes it to the floor but its Griffiths who gets Magourlic in a Head & Arm Choke Winner Griffiths 2.57 Rnd 1 Head & Arm Choke

Sixth Fight is a Lightweight fight between Paul Rodgers (Chris Rees) against Thomas James (Savage MMA)

Thomas James wastes no time & goes straight in & gets a takedown, gains top position, Paul Rodgers has a great technical defensive game from his back as he tries for a armbar then triangle from below, Rodgers technical skills are showing through in this fight and its Rodgers who gets the Kimura Winner Rodger 2.45 rnd 1 Kimura

Seventh fight & I knew as soon as I saw these fighters it would go the distance, let’s call it a gut instinct I have! Its Light Heavyweight time and we have Gareth Stacey (NMMA) against Simas Norkus (Brotherhood MMA)

Norkus gets the Takedown just where you would want this fight to go if you were a former European & US Wrestling Champ! Stacey is working hard to stop Norkus passing his guard, Stacey does point out to the ref which at this point is right in front of me Norkus is holding onto his glove & pulling it back, so is warned lightly of this, this fight is staying as expected on the floor, Norkus tries a knee bar, which Stacey looks to ref & points out is illegal, Stacey capitalizes on this & gets Norkus on his back if only for a few seconds, Stacey is back to being on his back but bar no means is this fight boring, or very one-sided, Stacey is doing a very good job of keeping Norkus of gaining the wrist control he is looking for by shrimping #101 #basics, this fight goes from strength to strength with Norkus being dominant though out even locking in a RNC in rnd 2 but Stacey hung on as the bell went, great display of technical skills from both men in this fight. Winner UD Simas Norkus

The Eighth fight was in the Lightweight division and was crowd pleaser , sporting a green Mohawk Jason “Grasshopper”Jenkins (Falcons) who entrance alone tore the roof of the leisure centre against Sean Meany (Chris Rees)

Meany came out & got the first takedown early but it was Jenkins showing dominant skills, control & body shots for the rest of the 1st rnd, the 2nd rnd Jenkins goes for a takedown but Meany sprawls, Jenkins still gets Meany where he wants him on the ground , a nice axe kick followed by the famous “Grasshopper” move allowed Jenkins to get Meany in a Gulliotine choke Winner Jenkins 1.12 Rnd 2 Guillotine Choke

Nineth Fight of the night we move onto the Unified Amateur Rules (3x3mins)

Light Heavyweight bout between Sam Stockdale from Cornwall (Fusion MMA) against Ryan Marshall (Tillery Combat)

This has the crowd on their feet as Ryan Marshall’s entrance music is beginning to be played which is ironically is a sample of a Eminem track – business, (If you haven’t heard it look it up on YouTube then you will know where I’m coming from) you can now tell this is a packed venue with a great atmosphere.

Stockdale gets this fight underway with some great knees & Marshall exchanges with some shots of his own, Stockdale gets the early takedown but not for long, both men on their feet but this time its Marshall who got the Takedown & gets top position with some vicious GnP, Stockdale doing well to defend Marshall off in the 1st rnd. We go into the 2nd rnd Marshall gets the takedown & takes top position Stockdale defends really well & gains Top position raining blows down on Marshall, not lasting for long as Marshall gains top position; this is a battle of who really wants it the most; it ends up against the fence with both men standing, Marshall gets a great Big Body slam & top position but again not for long as Stockdale then gains top position, as we enter the final rnd Stockdale opens up with great leg kicks & gets a takedown but blink again & Marshall is in Top Position this is a real contender for #FOTN in my books both men are going toe-toe & ground to ground with one another, Marshall lets Stockdale get back to his feet (we know Ryan Marshall has a great pedigree in Boxing skills & this is where he likes its best) not taking nothing at all away from Stockdale, as Stockdale is back to his feet Marshall’s corner is shouting at him to get another takedown – & that’s what happened. Winner UD Ryan Marshall #FOTN for me.

Fight Ten sees us back in the Featherweight division Daryl Grant from Sidmouth (Lionsden) against Josh Reed (Tillery Combat)

Grant comes out with strong Leg kicks & Reed answers with strong Punches, Reed takes this to the ground with a great text-book Guillotine Winner Josh Reed 0.52 Rnd 1 Guillotine Choke #SUB of the night for me

Fight Eleven Middleweight Division between Will Davies (Chris Davies) and Lenny Benskin (Brotherhood MMA) Now this one I was particularly looking forward too, I had heard on the grapevine there had been a bit of bad blood between these two guys so I was hoping for them to leave it all in the cage tonight & boy I wasn’t disappointed.

There was a touch of gloves of some sorts to start with but Will Davies was very sneaky & went straight from there a bit too quick – sneaky! Davies was straight in trading toe – toe & got a big slamming takedown, but Benskin was having none of it, turned it round & ended on top position, Benskin let Davies stand as this is where Benskin likes to do more damage & to dish punishment at its best, he comes in with a superman punch up against the fence which takes Davies to the floor from there Benskin is raining blow after blow until referee Mark Woodard stepped in & stops the fight Winner Lenny Benskin 1.52 Rnd 1 G’n’P

Fight twelve were now at the PRO fights first in the Light Weight Division

Dave Addicott (DOW) against Kyle Prosser (Tillery Combat) Addicott goes straight in with leg kicks whilst Prosser goes to sweep Addicott’s leg to go for a takedown, Prosser is on bottom position but don’t let this fool you, he is very dominant & active going for a triangle & armbar attempt which fails then he is raining hard elbows to Addicotts middle of his head which I can hear from where I am sat, Prosser goes for another triangle attempt but Addicott breaks full guard, Prosser still raining hard elbows & dominating from back position. Rnd 2nd & Addicott pushes forward, Addicott gets the takedown and Prosser doing text-book defending from his back and attempts yet another triangle but unsuccessful, Addicott is doing all he can in the meantime unleashing some blows to Prosser, but Prosser defending well. We enter the last rnd both men are toe – toe trading blows, Addicott catches Prosser with a straight right to cause a devastating split across his left eye, referee Mark Woodard steps in & gets the Medics to look at the cut, the Medics say the fight cannot go on, this is unfortunate No-one wants to win by a Dr Stoppage in this Game & on my cards I had Prosser winning 2 rnds up! Winner Dave Addicott 1.18 Rnd 3 DR Stoppage

Fight thirteen in the Welterweight division with Nottingham’s up and coming Max Cotton (RAW) against Owain Parry (Tillery Combat)

Both Men come out ready to trade toe-to-toe, Parry comes out with a Spinning Back fist that misses, the fast Cotton catches Parry with a right cross which floors him, Cotton isn’t stopping there though and he goes to carry on until the Referee Mark Woodard steps in Winner Max Cotton 0.23 secs rnd 1 TKO #KO of the night for me.

Fight fourteen of the night is a Lightweight Title Fight between Jamie Rogers (DOW) against Marc ‘suplex’ Allen from Cheltenham (Trojan)
